you sign in. It goes to the address on this account and works once.
It is the weaker of the two. Anyone who can read your email can
read the code, so it will never stand in for the app on a password reset — a reset
link already arrives in that same inbox. An authenticator app is the stronger choice,
and a passkey is stronger still.
Forgot your password? The everyday fix is the emailed reset link on the sign-in page. A spare key is the deeper fallback: it works even if you lose access to your inbox. Each one works once.
